Herman Hess did not have a vocation as a theologian as his parents intended, he first worked as an apprentice watchmaker and was later employed in a bookshop and as a mechanic. In 1904, when he was 27 years old, "Peter Camenzind" was published, the story of a young peasant who dreams of writing a great and beautiful poem. The whole book is actually a poem, a poem in which Peter tries to discover his "self". He descends from the mountain where he lives, creates a great friendship with Richard, falls in love with Rosi Girtanner, later with Elizabeth who ends up marrying another man, travels in several countries, meets Boppi with whom he builds a strong friendship, and then returns home to take care of his father. A simple but wonderful story.
